I'll often work with folks for months, building strength doing personal training sessions or coaching them for endurance events, before they are ready to dig into the nutrition side of things. It's a really big deal! Fueling yourself to perform at your best or alter your body composition doesn't have to be complicated but it does require some effort and attention.
Here's a note I wrote to a client who's been getting stronger and fitter and reached out about taking things to the next level. You'll read about the Nutrition Coaching process and how I work with clients to sort things out.:-)
"Ok! You are working hard and it shows! The next piece of the puzzle is working on how you feed your body to keep up with your new level of activity and see the changes you want in body composition.
I know it's not an easy thing to tackle. We have built habits over years that feel comfortable even though they aren't helping us reach our goals. Getting out of our own way to let new things happened is hard. But, totally doable.
The most important thing is being ready. You have to be ready to make changes. Then we start taking small steps that DO helps us reach our goals comes next. It gets a little easier after that.
When you are ready - keep a food journal for at least 5 days. Try to get a workday or two and a snapshot of how weekends go. Include as much detail as possible; when, where, what and how much you are eating and drinking.
Put in your workout details and add any notes on mood, environment, hunger and energy levels that come up for you.
Once you have this completed we will sit down for an hour long Complete Initial Session.
During this time we will cover nutritional basics, suss out your goals, review your food journal and start outlining action steps that you can take NOW.
At each follow-up appointment we review the week's homework, highlight your successes and note obstacles that came up along the way. From there we set the plan for the next week and off you go!
